Homenaje a Javier Álvarez / Homage to Javier Álvarez is a one-night performance featuring electroacoustic compositions by one of the most celebrated Mexican composers of our time. The music of Javier Álvarez (1956-1923) combines a rich tapestry of electronic sounds with live acoustic instruments, infused with rhythms and sounds rooted in a deep love for his native Mexico. Concert curator Francisco Eme notes, “When you listen to his music, you listen to Mexico inserted perfectly in the great global discourse of contemporary music.”
Homenaje a Javier Álvarez celebrates the life and work of this remarkable, community-minded composer at the one- year anniversary of his passing. Central to the program is the powerful Temazcal for maracas and electronic sounds, performed by Camilo Zamudio, as well as Lluvia de Toritos for solo flute, performed by Alexander “Sasha” Ishov. The program also features Peninsula de Pajaros and Mejor Morir en la Selva, two works never before heard in San Diego, with electronic spatialization performed by Eme.
